The so called Second Home Visa for Bali (Indonesia) is officially launched – and available by the end of 2022
Indonesia was planning to launch a long-term Visa for digital nomads and investors since several years and there have been numerous announcements when a “Digital Nomad Visa” would be available and what would be the conditions. As it looks now, with the conditions of “proof of funds” requiring a substantial amount of money, it would be misleading to call this Visa a Digital Nomad Visa.
On October 25, 2022, the Directorate General of Immigration has issued a new decree (Circular Number IMI-0740.GR.01.01) and officially announced that the new Second Home Visa will be available at the end of 2022 (60 days after the decree takes effect). has been ratified, effective Dec 24 2022). This new visa will not be called a “Digital Nomad” Visa but a Second Home Visa.
Second Home Visa
The goal is clear. Indonesia understands and appreciates the contribution of foreigners living in Indonesia. To date, there is no clear and easy way for foreigners to stay longer in Indonesia unless they apply for a Retirement Visa. It is logical to expect that in essence the Second Home Visa will at some point replace the Retirement Visa.
Second Home Visa to attract more foreigners living in Indonesia
“Ahead of the G20 Summit, today we officially launch the Second Home Visa today. The goal is to attract foreign tourists to Bali and various other destinations,” said Acting General Immigration Pak Widodo Ekatjahjana.
This visa is also suitable for former Indonesian Citizens.
However, the “proof of funds” – the USD 140,000 requirement may come as a surprise to young digital nomads hoping that visas will be easy to obtain, allowing them to come to Bali, enjoy the lifestyle, and work as freelancers or remote workers without having to get a visa. B211A and continue to extend it.
Second Home Visa Requirements
How long will the Second Home Visa be Valid?
The visa is valid for a minimum of 5 or / and 10 years. The details are not yet defined.
What do I need to apply for the Second Home Visa?

- PASSPORT – valid for a minimum of 36 months
- PROOF OF FUNDS – with a value of at least ID 2 billion (ca. USD 140,000)

What is required to proof the funds?

- You can own a property in Indonesia (probably of minimum the same value) Clarification: Even though you cannot own land in Indonesia, you can lease the land and own the property that is built on the land
It is expected that the funds might have to be deposited in some form, or that immigration could check regularly, whether this minimum amount is still in the bank account.
What am I allowed to do with this Visa, while in Indonesia?
First, you CANNOT work in Indonesia with this Visa. Means, you can not be a life coach in Indonesia, a manager of a business, and neither can you create any income in Indonesia through activities in Indonesia and therefore be paid to a bank account in Indonesia. It is not a work permit.
You can be a remote worker, freelancer for entities abroad, be on staycation or simply stay here as a tourist. IN the press release “investment” is also mentioned. However, being an investor in Indonesia does also come with other requirements depending on what type of investments are done (e.g. company shareholder).
Will Indonesia allow me to make an income outside of Indonesia, without taxing this income?
We assume at this point, that your global income will not be taxed. That would defy the purpose of this visa. However, this small but important detail has not yet been discussed nor clarified.

Based on the article published by the immigration office, foreigners will be able to apply for the Second Home Visa online.
What does the Second Home Visa Cost?
The price will be IDR 3,000,000 (ca. USD 220)
Can I bring my family?
Yes, the Visa holder can sponsor his spouse and children. The details are not yet clear.
WIll all nationalities be able to apply for a Second Home Visa?
That is not clarified yet. Probably some nationalities will not be eligible.
What happened to the Digital Nomad Visa?
Well, this is it. At this point we don”t foresee that the requirement of having to proof funds of USD 140,000 or above will be changed. We might be wrong, but for now the Second Home Visa is what the government has created to attract foreigners to stay longer in Indonesia. What was referred to as Digital Nomad Visa previously, assuming that the hurdle to get it would be lower, is probably not going to happen. And it is expected that it will replace the Retirement Visa at some point.
